Sam Ask

Who is Sam Ask?

Sam Ask was a member of a Lund academic family. He enrolled at Lund University in 1897 as law student but never graduated before formally breaking off his studies in 1909. On the other hand, he participated in a series of carnivals, ‘Überbrett’l’ and similar student events. Not least he became known for his lush narrative art which inspired Lund authors such as Frank Heller and Fritiof Nilsson Piraten.

In 1916 Sam Ask was appointed editor of a publishing company and film-script writer for early Swedish cinema in the form of Svenska biografteatern and Skandiafilm. Parts of his production are published under the pseudonym A.V. Samsjö.

Sam Ask was severely overweight and his expression on a postcard, sent back to Sweden while on a trip to Italy, is famous: ‘Freshly squeezed through the Simplon Tunnel, I am now spreading myself over the Lombardy plain.’
