What is the Lukas Guild? The Guild of St Luke is the name of the traditional fraternity of artists. In accordance with tradition, the evangelist Luke was a painter and sculptor, for which reason the artists chose him as a patron saint.

The Guild of St Luke originated in the 13th century. Practically all artists from earlier periods have been accepted into guilds in different cities, e.g. Leonardo da Vinci, Rubens, Frans Hals and Raphael.

The Guild of St Luke in Lund was instituted in 1898 by seven Lund citizens, amongst these being the art historians Ewert Wrangel and Axel Nilsson. The fraternity’s goal is reflected in the name, a following of the tradition of medieval painters’ guilds. The members consist mainly of Skåne artists, literary people, academics, museum experts and musicians. The guild meets once a year at Grand Hotel, in a convivial spirit, and humorous caricatures are drawn of the members of the guild.
