Jensen-Carlén

Who was Carl Henrik Jensen-Carlén? Carl Henrik Jensen-Carlén, born in Lund in 1888, died in Stockholm 1957. Swedish draughtsman (caricaturist), painter and advertising man. Known under the signature “C.C.” but by contemporaries also called “Jönsson-Karlsson”.

Jensen-Carlén grew up in a well-to-do Lund home. At an early stage he demonstrated artistic talent, not least as a caricaturist. He first trained as an architect but also studied portrait painting at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen.

Some of Jensen-Carlén’s best drawings emerged within the framework of the Lund student world. It was here he participated in student publications such as ‘Majgreven’ and ‘Lundagård’ and performed as a rapid-sketch artist at cabarets at the Academic Society (AF) in Lund.

As a regular at Grand Hotel, Carlén sometimes paid his bills in the form of original caricatures and a large number of these still adorn the hotel restaurant and lobby.
